From The Fields 7/5/13

Well, wheat harvest has come and gone on this farm.  I know a couple of others have started harvesting wheat, but it seems to just be getting started around here.  Thanks to the needed rain, though, baling the straw has been delayed, but the rain was welcome, and I'm pretty sure the straw will get baled this week.  We don't plant any double-crop soybeans, but I do know where the wheat has been harvested that there is some planting going on.  But we will start injecting liquid hog manure and spend the next few weeks emptying out the hog barn pits.

Chris made a trip up towards Hagerstown to pick up a hay elevator for us-no more having to heave bales up into the lofts for us.  Well, not us. That isn't something I could do even if I tried.  He said he couldn't really remember the last time the crops look this good for so many miles, knock of wood.  I headed to a friend's house the other evening and passed a cornfield about three miles from us that had tassels.

Friends of Johnson County Agriculture had their Know Your Neighbor event this weekend, and it was a huge success.  They work with a farmer to open up the farm for tours, answer questions, mingle with neighbors and help to educate the non-farming neighbors about what we as farmers do and the importance of agriculture to our county.  There was a great community turnout at Morris Farms in Bargersville.

We're still plugging away at 4-H projects.  If you need us, we will be hand-sorting a gallon of wheat kernels-but, hey, we still have a good 10 days until that projects is due!

This week I didn't have to Instagram myself because much to my surprise when I got on Instragram IndyMilkMaid had already taken a pic and posted it (and I didn't even hint for her to, pay her or bribe her in anyway) and totally made my day!

If your on Instagram be sure to check her out - I love her pics!!!

Some other pics from this week:

Pics from Wheatmas - which by the way is an official holiday in my book and an official word in my phone!

Authors note:  Some pictures are from my iPhone and some from my big girl camera some have been edited in Instagram some on my computer some are just pics - I am working with myself on being less anal about all my pictures matching and being tweaked hoping that by relaxing I will blog more without thinking I have to adjust every picture-it is my own personal demon!!!!!!
